Rohit Sharma's steps to the Captaincy

In IPL 2009, Kolkata Knight Riders had everything going against them. Ranging from probably the not-so-lucky team attire to the split captaincy saga, nothing seemed right. It went on to become so bad that one of the rival captains had to write the tips for winning a match. Finally, after losing 8 matches in a row, KKR found themselves in a winning situation. They would have to defend 22 runs in the final over.

But, it had to be done against Rohit Sharma.

Rohit Sharma plundered 26 runs of Masharafe Mortaza over to dash the hopes of KKR. Already spotted as a good talent in T20 world cup, Rohit Sharma became a hot IPL property. Mumbai Indians had no 2nd thoughts when Rohit was available.

After years of title-less IPL campaigns by Mumbai Indians, the most successful international captain was brought in. As the fate would have it, his form was not really top notch.

Rohit Sharma, already a sure candidate in the playing 11, was given a chance to fill in the captaincy shoes. Mumbai Indians won the trophy that year for the first time. And, have won it more than once since. No wonder, they never had to look for a new captain after the days of reluctancy by Sachin Tendulkar.

The opening spot gifted by Dhoni in ODI's, 2 double hundreds and a top notch form made him a sure starter in the India playing 11. The claim buoyed by 5 successful years of IPL captaincy, made him an automatic choice for captaincy once Virat Kohli decided to take a break.
